killed by domesticated
and feral cats
fencepost chirps
altar of hollow bones
blue jays & chickadees
twigs moss mud
juncos appear in gray times
barely leave a mark
on the snow,
the shell of a seed.
We cannot understand
Shakespeare: nay, I’ll have a starling
squint the speckled feathers
can’t take back a word
even an invasive one
there’s a special providence in the fall
of a sparrow—
