The roots are older than any other tree
I can see from here. Not just older than me.
Early in fall, almost still summer,
leaves bright yellow, not yet done,
right there where the sun slides
low and hits river rock like a spotlight,
I could pry that one rock up
and bury my secret there. Deep enough.
Instead I will jimmy off some bark,
chew it, and soothe my aching heart.
