On Attention and Delay

I went to the edge of the field to learn what remained
once purpose loosened its hold upon observation.
The grass did not instruct me,
yet my looking altered its duration.
A stone retained its weight without argument.
The pond accepted reflection as a temporary condition.
Nothing required interpretation,
though language persisted nearby,
waiting for consent.
Thought advanced slowly,
less as assertion than as pressure,
testing how far a sentence might proceed
without arriving elsewhere.
In such moments, meaning ceased to travel.
It stayed with the surface of things,
with bark holding its weather,
with water repeating itself without conclusion.
I noticed how writing behaves
when released from the obligation to carry.
It listens, it delays, it stands adjacent.
It neither persuades nor resolves.
The self-thinned under this practice of regard.
Attention widened.
What remained was not knowledge,
but duration made visible.
If there is instruction here,
it lies in restraint.
One learns to leave words where they are,
allowing them to be present
without insisting they go further.
